Lough Gur Necklace with Gold
This hand forged sterling silver necklace features a domed centre which is covered with hand fused 24 carat gold. It is hung on a sterling silver trace chain.
It is based on an ancient bronze shield from the Late Bronze Age (c.700 BC). The original shield was found in a bog between Ballinamoona and Herbertstown, near Lough Gur, Co. Limerick, Ireland.
Made the same way as the original shield, this necklace is hand forged from flat silver sheet with the raised bosses beaten out from behind. The concentric circles are hand engraved into the front. The 24 carat gold is hand fused on in 5 layers using an ancient Korean technique called keum bu. This gives the gold a beautiful warm texture and creates a thick, hard-wearing coating of gold over 100 times thicker than gold plating.
